Hear Our Story and Meet Our Team
The Service was established in 2001 by May Gray and a group consisting of counsellors and others with an interest in counselling. The group’s aim was to provide a professional, quality, counselling service for the people of East Kilbride and the surrounding area.
Kerith first opened its doors in August 2001 in a local church that shared our vision, and kindly offered us some space. During a period of five and a half years, the service grew considerably. Local GP’s, Social Services and Churches were increasingly recommending our service to those in need of the kind of help KCS was offering.
During 2006/7 it became clear that the organisation was outgrowing the facility at the church premises. Following a further move from rented office space, we finally found our present building. It was purchased by church people who have a passion for the work of Kerith, and rent this property to us. It is an ideal environment for the sensitive face to face work that is carried out there. We are now looking to the future and reaching out beyond the walls of our counselling centre and extending our reach to communities beyond East Kilbride and the surrounding areas. Kerith is in the process of developing an online counselling service that will continue to be managed from the Counselling Hub at 23 Montgomery Street.
Kerith is extremely grateful to many individuals who have given, and continue to give, of their time, experience and skill, voluntarily, in the many different roles that make up the life of the organisation.
Our high standard of service has been rewarded by seeing people helped and lives changed. In 2012 the founder May Gray was awarded an MBE for Kerith’s contribution to Counselling in the West of Scotland. This has been a great encouragement for the organisation as a whole. During the life of Kerith, we have helped several thousand individuals and offered training placement to hundreds of student counsellors.
Our commitment and vision to make a difference in our community and beyond by delivering an affordable professional service, burns as brightly as the day our journey began.
We can assure you of
- An affordable professional service
- Confidentiality – your privacy is important to us. Kerith is GDPR compliant and registered with the ICO (Information Commission Office)

Our priority is to value each client’s unique individuality, and with skill, care and compassion enable them to find a way forward towards wholeness, and restoration, reduced confusion, and a return to making decisions; as well as an ability to look to the future in an attitude of hope.
Are We A Christian Organisation?
We work within a Christian context which means we will discuss faith issues with clients at their request. The counsellors do not initiate prayer or biblical discussion, this would always be initiated by our clients. Many of our counsellors are professing Christians from a variety of denominations.
Some of our experienced counsellors who hold a supervision qualification, and have a special interest in faith groups, are happy to be engaged in a mentoring or supportive role.
Kerith wishes to support the valuable pastoral work done by churches. When special support is required access to a counselling service can be of great value to both ministry teams and church contacts. We do this by offering a partnership scheme to Churches in East Kilbride and beyond.
For a reasonable monthly fee, we can provide your Fellowship with access to a fast and reliable counselling service all year round. Individuals needing help will have the benefit of the service without any cost to themselves. Each referral from you will receive 12 counselling sessions normally charged at £27.50 per hourly session.
